The stages of breast cancer are classified on a scale of 0 to 4. Stage 0 is non-invasive cancer and it remains in the initial (original) location itself. Stage 4 is invasive cancer and it has already been spread outside the breast and reached other parts of the body.

    Stage 0

Non-invasive breast cancers are associated with stage 0 types of breast cancers. For example, DCIS (short for ductal carcinoma in situ). There is no clear evidence of cancer cells or non-cancerous abnormal cells in stage 0 breast cancer nor do they invade any of the neighbouring tissues.

    Stage 1

Stage 1 has an invasive type of breast cancer which means that the cancer cells break through and invade the neighbouring breast tissues as well. It is divided into two categories. They are called 1A and 1B. In this stage, there is a tumour in the breast which is usually smaller than 2 cm along with small groups of cancerous cells that are bigger than 0.2 mm and smaller than 2 mm in lymph nodes of the body.

    Stage 2

Stage 2 breast cancer is further divided into two subcategories that are called 2A and 2B. It describes invasive breast cancer where no evident tumour can be found inside either of the breasts. In one to three axillary lymph nodes, cancer is found which is larger than 2 mm.

    Stage 3

Stage 3 breast cancer is further divided into three subcategories. They are called 3A, 3B, and 3C. In stage 3 breast cancer, no tumour is found or the tumour might be any size. Cancer is usually found in 4 to 9 axillary lymph nodes and in the lymph nodes that are present near the breastbone. This is detected at the time of the physical exam or imaging tests.

At times, the tumour is larger than 5 cm and some small groups of cancerous cells are also found which are bigger than 0.2 mm and smaller than 2 mm in the lymph nodes.

    Stage 4

Stage 4 is invasive breast cancer and it has spread further to the breasts, reached the lymph nodes and other neighbouring organs of the body. This may include lungs, skin, liver, bones and brain. Some also describe stage 4 breast cancer as advanced or metastatic.
