A school screening or sports physical can end with a number your teen’s doctor calls the Cobb angle. That number shapes whether the next step is a recheck in six months, a brace, or a surgical consult. Below we explain the thresholds specialists use, then list five chiropractic offices in the Draper area that families can contact, starting with Draper Spinal Care.

What does a Cobb angle actually measure?

A Cobb angle is the degree of sideways curve in the spine, measured on a standing X-ray. The reader finds the most tilted vertebrae at the top and bottom of the curve, draws a line along each, and measures the angle where those lines meet.

The Scoliosis Research Society uses 10 degrees as the cutoff for a scoliosis diagnosis. Readings of the same X-ray can differ by about 5 degrees, so a small change between visits may not mean the curve grew.

What do the Cobb angle ranges mean for a teen?

Each range usually points toward a different plan for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, the most common type in teens. Your teen’s doctor will weigh these against age, growth, and curve pattern.

    • 10 to 25 degrees is mild. Most growing teens are rechecked with X-rays every 4 to 6 months.
    • 25 to 40 degrees is moderate. Bracing is commonly recommended while growth remains.
    • 45 to 50 degrees or more is severe. Surgical evaluation is often discussed, since curves this size tend to keep progressing into adulthood.

Bracing has solid evidence behind it. The BrAIST trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2013, found that 72 percent of braced teens avoided reaching the surgical range, compared with 48 percent of teens who were only observed.

Why does growth matter as much as the number?

A 20 degree curve in a 12 year old carries more risk than the same curve in a 17 year old, because curves progress mostly during growth spurts. Doctors estimate remaining growth with the Risser sign, a 0 to 5 grade based on how much the hip’s growth plate has hardened on the X-ray. A grade of 0 to 2 means significant growth is still ahead. Girls are also considerably more likely than boys to have curves that progress far enough to need treatment, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Which chiropractic offices near Draper can families contact?

These five practices serve families in Draper and the south end of the Salt Lake Valley:

    1. Draper Spinal Care
    2. Summit Family Chiropractic and Wellness
    3. Finsand Chiropractic
    4. Balanced Chiropractic
    5. Chiropractic 4 Kids & Families

A chiropractor does not replace an orthopedic specialist for diagnosing or managing scoliosis, so plan on keeping both in the loop.

    1. Draper Spinal Care

Draper Spinal Care is a chiropractic practice on State Street in Draper led by Dr. Joshua Stockwell, D.C., a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic. The office focuses on NUCCA, an upper cervical technique that uses small, precise corrections with no twisting, popping, or cracking of the neck. That can make a first visit easier for a teen who is nervous about chiropractic care.

For families working through a scoliosis diagnosis, the practice offers:

    • A detailed postural and spinal assessment before care begins
    • Gentle adjustments for neck pain, back pain, or headaches that can accompany a curve
    • Nutrition and deficiency testing, including vitamin D levels, which matter for bone health
    • Care designed to sit alongside the monitoring or bracing plan from your teen’s orthopedic specialist

Chiropractic care is not a substitute for orthopedic treatment of a progressing curve, and individual results vary. The office offers a complimentary consultation so parents can ask questions first.

    2. Summit Family Chiropractic and Wellness

Summit Family Chiropractic and Wellness is a family chiropractic office in Draper, convenient for parents who want care close to home.

    3. Finsand Chiropractic

Finsand Chiropractic is a chiropractic practice in South Jordan, a short drive west of Draper.

    4. Balanced Chiropractic

Balanced Chiropractic is located in Riverton. Families can call the office to learn which services it provides for teens.

    5. Chiropractic 4 Kids & Families

Chiropractic 4 Kids & Families is a chiropractic office in Alpine, north of Draper on the other side of Point of the Mountain.

What should parents do after getting a Cobb angle number?

Write down the exact angle, the X-ray date, and the Risser grade, then ask for the same measurements at every follow-up so you can compare them. A change of more than 5 degrees between visits is the usual sign of real progression. Many mild curves stay stable, but they still need regular checks until your teen stops growing. If pain, posture, or comfort questions come up along the way, schedule a consultation with a chiropractor who will work alongside your teen’s medical team.
